Karel Appel, Dutch painter and sculptor, was born on April 25, 1921 in Amsterdam. In 1948, he founded the experimental artistic group with Corneille and Constant. This group became the nucleus of the Cobra movement. He made numerous relief wood panels and murals on the theme of the child. His painting, devoid of any reference to reality, is then violently gestural and materialistic. He died on May 3, 2006.
